The Dallas Cowboys have a gaping hole at middle linebacker, again.
An MRI confirmed Sean Lee suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Tuesday's organized team activity practice, the Cowboys reported on their website late Tuesday night. The injury will sideline Lee for most, if not all of the 2014 season.
It's the latest setback for Lee, who is an impact player when healthy but missed 18 games in his first four NFL seasons because of injuries, including a neck sprain that took him out for five games last season. He signed a new seven-year, $42,635,600 million contract in August 2013.
The Cowboys' in-house options at middle linebacker include DeVonte Holloman, Justin Durant and Anthony Hitchens, a rookie fourth-round draft pick out of Iowa.
Lee's injury occurred when he tried to plant before being blocked by rookie first-round pick Zack Martin on a screen pass during a team drill Tuesday. He left the field in obvious frustration.
Under the collective-bargaining agreement, OTA practices are to be non-contact, but that doesn't stop injuries from occurring. Chicago Bears receiver Domenik Hixon announced on Facebook that he tore an ACL for the third time Tuesday.
