Twenty-four hours after Rory McIlroy told the world about his “mutual” breakup with Caroline Wozniacki, which came days after the couple’s wedding invitations were sent out, the tennis star broke her short silence with a heartbreaking, but hopeful, tweet to her 614,000 Twitter followers.

Wozniacki had also changed her Twitter avatar and bio to reflect her changed relationship status. Here’s how it looked yesterday.

And how it looks today:

McIlroy has yet to change his Twitter avatar, which shows him and Wozniacki posing on a ski mountain.

Not that breakups are ever easy, but it has to be particularly difficult to be a young, public figure who has to split in the public eye, dealing with things such as conspicuously changing a Twitter avatar and bio. The questions from the press won’t make it any easier. But rather than the public nature of the breakup being a burden, I suspect Wozniacki will find much sympathy from the press and tennis fans, which could prove cathartic.

Thousands of fans retweeted and favorited Wozniacki’s message, including world No. 1 Serena Williams.

Wozniacki begins play in the French Open next week.
