To brine or not to brine? That is one of the many questions facing Thanksgiving chefs. And House Speaker John Boehner believes brining makes for a flavorful turkey.
In an essay for Time magazine about Thanksgiving, the top Republican in the House boasts that he makes "the best turkey brine around."
is a concoction whipped up the day before Thanksgiving, CNN reports. His recipe calls for garlic, salt, pepper, bay leaves and Boehner's "secret ingredient" of maple syrup, mixed with water. The turkey is then submerged overnight.
The House speaker's turkey isn't as elaborate or time-consuming as the brine-cured roast turkey that famous political reporter/epicurean R.W. Apple Jr. of The New York Times swore by, which requires 72 hours of brining. But Boehner's aides attested to the speaker's culinary skills to CNN.
Speaking of Thanksgiving, Democrats on Wednesday launched a website aimed at helping people navigate political conversations at the dinner table.
YourRepublicanUncle.com is chock-full of tips on how Democrats can talk to their GOP relatives about issues such as the economy. "Nothing ruins a slice of pecan pie faster than talking through immigration reform with a cousin who spends too much time listening to Rush Limbaugh," says Matt Compton, digital director for the Democratic National Committee.
